So I am getting a gift for my graduation (an iPod!!), but in truth I have never had one and I have no idea which type I should get. My parents are letting me decide. Right now its coming down to iPod Classic vs. iPod Touch. For different reasons, iPod Classic has a LOTTA memory, that I can hold lots of songs and have videos playing (always a plus), while iPod Touch has a nice big screen that I can play games with, always nice when I have to take the bus or train in college, but on the other hand, its got mediocre memory.

Preferably I was looking in the $150 range (so basically the crappiest versions =/). I think 80gig for classic and 8gig for touch. So Classic can hold ten times as much. I am playing around with my brother's Nano and that one is also 8 gigs.

Any comments on a very very far behind teenager?

8GB is more than enough for basic things. Just store extra things you think "oh, might watch that" on your computer and transfer. I mean, unless you're going to be taking longer trips out, having 80GB isn't going to be the best, and an iPod Touch would have more features to toy with.

I have an 8gb nano, it holds almost all of my metal collection, i just cycle it around a bit to get different songs. Movies and videos will chew up the space on something only 8gb though, i tend to only put theone or two i think i could watch on it at one time.

Personally i think the games and extra features the Touch gives you are rubbish, its designed as a portable music playing device, not a portable gaming console, if you want one of them, get a PSP/DS/whatever.
The majority of the extrav features are just rubbish. Lets pretend to drink beer shall we? If you want beer, go and buy a bottle.

Well i mean I liked the Touch because of simple games like Solitare, minesweeper, and apparently guitar hero and monopoly (common things you find on any PC). Plus, if its jailbroken I heard its basically an iPhone without the phone. The only thing I MIGHT be worried about is that my song collection may be too limited with the Touch (thus the classic). I tried playing a game on the Nano (still great for waiting), but it was totally annoying dealing with the wheeling being used to do all the apps.

I own a DS, but I am just looking for short time wasting games that I can play at my leisure. Plus its small and super portable, so I wouldn't have to "pack up" if i were using a laptop. Still a tough decision... I worry that getting such a nice iPod is just encouraging someone to steal it (one thing that my father had against me getting a super expensive iPhone).

Though I have a question: Would having an iPod Touch with apps give me much less space than 8gb? Or is the Touch already compensating for the apps?

According to the Apple site, the Touch can hold 1,750 songs or 10 hours of video. As the apps are programs, I would imagine they will take up memory space. It's not 8GB plus apps, just 8GB.

You have to decide whether you want more music or a more versatile device. The Classic will give you more music space than you will probably ever need. The Touch can even do your email.

I use a sony MP3 walkman and I don't have any complaints about it. There are some other brands out there as well so check out the alternatives.

I use a Creative Zen.
24 hour battery(music),and 10 hour battery for videos.
For 150$ here you can get the 8gb one,so basicly it would be like 100$ in the US.
(I am just guessing,but prices are probably lower)
The screen is pretty "big",so i watch TV shows,movies,pr0n on it.
Oh and also it has this "feature" called TV,it doesnt work here,but i heard it works in Japan or something.(Dont ask any further,i have no idea)

I have a 80gig classic and love it. My music (about 1300 songs atm is less then the 8 gigs, but it works GREAT for my shitton of podcasts and TV shows I like to keep on it. So if you plan to hold alot of stuff 80 gig is great, for just a small music collection the touch is probably better.

I'd like a Touch. The classic is ok for long-trips (longer battery+movies+extra memory). The touch is cool to mess with, and can also connect to wi-fi, and be a handy tool if you're in the city, as to find out what to eat via wi-fi, ect. If you do long trips (airplanes, buses, ect) get a classic. Although the games may be fun aswell.....

I think ill go touch than. If its 1250 songs, than it should be ok =). Now that I think about it, the Classic might play nice videos, but it would give me a HUGE headache trying to look at that small screen.

OP, probably already has a phone. Go with whatever can fit your music library and budget. In HS I had the 1st gen nano that could only fit 500 songs. That was good enough fo me because my library barely touched 300 songs. Now I tend to go with classic because it simply has more space to cram all my 10000 songs and a couple movies. I've played the games on my iphone and most of them suck or get boring fast. So I just listen to mine while on the bus.

Searching prices on ebay I see that there is a "generation 1" and "generation 2" iPod - since people are trading off their generation 1s, whats the big difference? I heard that the generation 2 is slimmer (life it makes a difference since i just need it to fit in my pocket), has more battery life, and a built in sound system.

Other than that would it really be worth paying more? Apparently 16gb gen 1s are the same price (even a lil less) than a 2nd gen. 8gb.

I am currently uploading some of my brothers old music to my PC and I am causally doing it. Hopefully it won't exceed 8 gb, but I might go for the gen 1s just because its a lot cheaper and seems like the same thing with more space.

Oh and as for the iPhone, I use verizon, im not drawing out an entirely new plan with a new company. I might need a new cell, but I will worry about that later. My parents are already buying so much for college including a laptop =O. So I wanna save them as much as possible.

No. It was cheaper than any iPod in my country at that time. They cost about $200 here.

Don't buy used gen 1's. The iPod batteries tends to die over time and there is no easy(or cheap) way to replace them.
